What is prostate?
The prostate is a gland found in men, approximately the size of a walnut, located just below the bladder, and produces various secretions for reproductive activities.
The prostate gland's job is to secrete a portion of the fluid that makes up semen (about 10-20%). This fluid nourishes and protects sperm, and helps them fertilize eggs.
The prostate gland is located where the urinary tract (urethra) passes. An enlarged prostate gland can narrow the urinary tract and cause difficulty urinating.
Prostate diseases are one of the most common diseases in men. These diseases include prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH), prostate cancer and prostatitis.
What is prostate enlargement?
Although the exact cause of prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) is unknown, a number of factors, including aging, hormones and genetic factors, are thought to play a role.
Aging: Prostate enlargement becomes more common in men with age. Approximately 50% of men over the age of 50 and 90% of men over the age of 70 have an enlarged prostate.
Hormones: Hormones such as testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone) are thought to play a role in prostate growth. Testosterone is a hormone that stimulates prostate growth. DHT is the metabolized form of testosterone in the prostate and is a more powerful growth stimulant than testosterone.
Genetic factors: Prostate enlargement is a familial disease. First-degree relatives of men with an enlarged prostate are at higher risk of developing an enlarged prostate.
How to understand prostate enlargement?
Symptoms of prostate enlargement include:
-
Difficulty urinating
-
Frequent urination
-
Nighttime urination
-
Urinary incontinence
-
Blood in the urine
Prostate enlargement can be diagnosed in our clinic with tests such as physical examination, urinalysis and prostate examination.
How to prevent prostate enlargement?
There is no surefire way to prevent prostate enlargement. However, living a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of prostate enlargement. A healthy lifestyle includes:
-
Healthy Eating
-
Regular exercise
-
Weight control
-
Not smoking
-
Limiting alcohol consumption
How is prostate surgery performed?
Prostate surgery is a surgical procedure that involves removing all or part of the prostate gland. Prostate surgery can be used to treat prostate diseases such as prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH), prostate cancer, and prostatitis.
Prostate surgery can be performed as an open surgery or a closed surgery.
Open prostate surgery is the most common prostate surgery in which all or part of the prostate is removed. Open prostate surgery is usually performed on large prostates or prostate cancer. Open prostate surgery is performed by making an incision in the abdomen that is approximately 15-20 cm long.
Closed prostate surgery is a less invasive prostate surgery that involves removing all or part of the prostate. Closed prostate surgery is usually performed on small prostates or enlarged prostates. Closed prostate surgery can be performed using one of the following methods:
Transurethral resection (TURP): TURP is a closed prostate surgery in which part or all of the prostate is removed through the urethra. TURP is the most common closed prostate surgery.
Laser prostate resection (LPU): LPU is a closed prostate surgery in which part or all of the prostate is removed using laser light. LPU is a procedure similar to TURP.
Robotic prostate resection (RRP): RRP is a closed prostate surgery in which part or all of the prostate is removed using robotic surgery. RRP is the newest closed prostate surgery.
The duration of prostate surgery varies depending on the type of surgery and the size of the prostate. Open prostate surgery usually takes 2-4 hours. Closed prostate surgery usually takes 1-2 hours.
After prostate surgery, the patient usually stays in the hospital overnight. Painkillers are used after the surgery. The patient may have difficulty urinating for several weeks after the surgery.
Risks of prostate surgery include bleeding, infection, urinary incontinence and erection problems.
Prostate surgery is an effective method for treating prostate diseases. However, the most appropriate treatment method for each patient should be determined according to the patient's individual characteristics.
